Renal Biopsy
A kidney biopsy is a procedure to take a small sample of kidney tissue for examination under a microscope. It helps identify exactly what is causing your kidney disease and how much damage has occurred.
Why is it done?
To diagnose unexplained kidney failure, blood in urine (hematuria), or large amounts of protein in urine (proteinuria). It's also used to monitor transplant rejection.
What to expect
It is usually a daycare procedure done under local anesthesia. You lie on your stomach, and a needle is guided by ultrasound. You'll need to rest for a few hours afterwards to prevent bleeding.
Permcath Insertion
A permcath is a long-term catheter placed into a large vein (usually in the neck) to allow for dialysis while waiting for a fistula to mature or as a semi-permanent solution.
The Procedure
Done under local anesthesia and ultrasound guidance. The catheter is "tunneled" under the skin to reduce infection risk. It takes about 30-45 minutes.
Care Tips
Keep the dressing dry and clean. Never let anyone use this line for blood draws or medicines unless it is a dialysis emergency.
Dialysis Support
When kidneys fail, dialysis does the work of cleaning your blood. There are two main types managed by our team.
Hemodialysis vs. Peritoneal Dialysis
- Hemodialysis: Blood is pumped out of your body to an artificial kidney machine, and returned. Usually done 2-3 times a week at a hospital.
- Peritoneal Dialysis (CAPD): Uses the lining of your abdomen to filter blood inside your body. Can be done at home, offering more freedom.
Kidney Transplant
The gold standard treatment for kidney failure. A healthy kidney from a donor (living or deceased) is placed into your body to take over filtration.
The Benefits
Better quality of life, dietary freedom, and longer survival compared to dialysis. No machine dependency.
Post-Transplant
You will need to take immunosuppressant medications for life to prevent rejection, but most patients lead active, normal lives.
